Cannes’ numbers lag behind those of other prominent film festivals. For instance, women directed 46% of the competition films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and 40% of the competition titles at the Berlin Film Festival.
Major studios backed more films with female leads in 2018, according to new research. Out of the top 100-grossing movies, 40 films had women in central roles as either the main character or the co-lead, according to the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. That represented an increase of eight films from the previous year and 20 movies from 2007. It is the highest percentage of female-driven films in 12 years.

Killer Content has lined up several prominent female investors and the New York Women’s Foundation to support its bid. Disney is honorary chairwoman and a past board member of the foundation. The organization works as something of philanthropic venture capitalist, said Ana Oliveira, the foundation’s president-CEO.
