Star City’s defender is getting a new team.
DC Entertainment on Saturday announced at WonderCon in Anaheim that writers (and sisters) Julie Benson and Shawna Benson will be heading up a new creative team for the monthly Green Arrow comic book series, beginning in May.
The two writers — who worked on The CW’s The 100, as well as the recent Batgirl & the Birds of Prey comic book series — will take over the series with Green Arrow Annual No. 2, before debuting on the regular series with August’s Green Arrow No. 43. In doing so, they will — remarkably — become the only women writers with a regular gig on a male-led solo title in either of DC or Marvel’s superhero lineups, an issue that has been gaining an increasing amount of attention among online fandom in recent months.
“As we mourn the loss of our beloved Birds, hope in the form of an arrow has struck us through the heart with the opportunity to take on Oliver Queen,” the two writers said in a statement provided by the publisher. “Ollie’s made a few appearances alongside the Birds since we began writing at DC with Rebirth, and we can’t wait to continue making our mark on the 77-year old marksman this summer. And we won’t be leaving our ladies behind! Black Canary, aka Ollie’s ‘Pretty Bird,’ will continue to star in Green Arrow.”
The Bensons’ Green Arrow Annual, released May 30, will be illustrated by Carmen Carnero, with a cover by David Lopez; the regular series will see them joined by Nightwing’s Javier Fernández on interior art, with Alex Maleev creating covers.
