Brisbane's exclusive Tattersall's Club has elected to move with the times, narrowly voting to allow women members.

The yes vote was carried 1405 votes to 1368, meaning the club will open its doors to women for the first time in its 150-year history.

Established by several "prominent gentlemen" associated with Brisbane's thoroughbred racing community in the 1860s, the club became a meeting place for Queensland's movers and shakers.

However with the passage of time, the fact that it only allowed male members became increasingly anachronistic and lead to pushes both from outside and inside the club to allow women to join.

Of particular note was in 2015 when both Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, who would have both been ordinarily automatically invited to join, were instead snubbed because they were women.

On Wednesday evening the premier said simply: "History. It's about time."

Tattersall's Club president Stuart Fraser told media after Wednesday's vote that the club had been seeking a more "family-friendly" atmosphere.
"We welcome the women in our families, the women in our lives, and the women in our communities," Mr Fraser said.

The club has been bitterly divided over the vote, with some members accused of aggressively lobbying other members.

Under the previous rules, women were able to enter the club if their partner or a family member was a member, or if they were attending a function, but they weren't able to be full members.
