Every single medal Team Canada won in the Tokyo Olympics so far belongs to a woman

Who runs the world? Girls, specifically female athletes from Canada who have been dominating the Tokyo Olympics.

So far, Canada has won 11 medals, each earned by women. The latest Olympic medal comes after Team Canada's rowing team won gold in the Women’s Eight competition.

Team Canada is composed of 317 athletes, 60% of which are or identify as female. But in 1984, only 37% of Team Canada was made up of women; now more than ever Team Canada is female-led.

Out of the 11 medals, three were gold medals, another three silver and five were bronze. 

The team of women have won in rowing, softball, weightlifting, judo, swimming and diving; making history and millions proud along the way.

Canadian women making history

On July 30, Team Canada celebrated the women's rowing team winning gold in the Women’s Eight competition. In a history-making win, swimmer Penny Oleksiak has won two medals in the swimming pool – a bronze in the 200-meter freestyle event and a silver in the women's 4x100-meter relay.

With her second win, Oleksiak became Team Canada's most-decorated summer Olympics athlete. She has earned one gold medal, two silvers and three bronze medals in her career.

Jessica Klimkait made history as the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic medal in judo's 57-kilogram division. Klimkait took home a bronze medal for Team Canada.

"Before coming to this Olympic Games, I decided that I wanted to use it as a representation and celebration of everything I’ve put into this sport," Klimkait said on Instagram. "Although bronze is not the colour I worked for, I’m still proud to have stepped on the podium. Getting this close will do nothing except motivate me even more."

In a streak of firsts, Canada's softball team won the country's first medal, beating Mexico 3-2 to claim bronze. Canada's second gold medal was won by weightlifter Maude Charron on the Olympic weightlifting event with a lift of 131kg or about 288.8 pounds. 

After winning, Charron just had one wish: "I just want to eat popcorn and cake."

Fans have been celebrating the athletes' wins, saying the women have become role models for girls everywhere. 

Fan Shay Cote, born and raised in Canada, called this year's Olympics "a wild dream." 

"The women are dominating, dominating men and many other teams," Cote told USA TODAY. "It's surreal to watch and such a relief to see female power take center stage."

"Regardless of medals, these women are showing up for young girls across the country," Katie Mitchell wrote on Twitter.

Jacqueline Beaulieu tweeted that Canadian Olympians such as Caileigh Filmer and Hillary Janssens are "inspiring."

Women from Team Canada are competing in more than 15 other events in Tokyo. So don't be surprised if they take home even more medals.
