THE first ever all-female sword and mace bearing team in York has been welcomed by the civic party.

Last year, Sarah White senior house steward at Mansion House became the city's first ever female sword bearer, and has now taken on the role of York’s first female mace bearer for the armistice centenary parade.

She was joined by fellow House Steward, Georgina Pike, who took over as sword bearer at the remembrance parade from the Minster.

This marked the first time in nearly 600 years that two women carried both notable emblems in the history of York.

The Rt Hon Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Keith Orrell, said: "It was an honour to be able to commemorate the Armistice Centenary, such a poignant moment in history, while presenting York’s first female sword and mace bearing team. It is always good to celebrate diversity in all areas and having female sword and mace bearers is one more example of how the Mayoralty is embracing diversity."

Senior mansion house steward, Sarah White, said: "I feel absolutely honoured to be part of the first all female sword and mace duo in one of York’s oldest traditions. It is such a monumental day when we can remember those who fought for our freedom whilst embracing equality and looking toward the future."

Mansion House steward, Georgina Pike, said: "It is a privilege to undertake a role in the first female partnership of Sword and Mace Bearers and on such a special day of commemoration. Whilst remembering the men and women who stood together 100 years ago, it is an honour to represent the changing role of women."
