Topline

The Brooklyn Municipal Building will be named after the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who hailed from the borough, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio announced Tuesday, as she continues receiving honors in the midst of the political battle underway to fill her seat.

Key Facts

“We want to make sure that we honor her in every conceivable way, and especially in the borough that she came from, that gave her so much of her strength and spirit, the borough of Brooklyn,” De Blasio said.

De Blasio’s announcement comes two years after Borough President Eric Adams started a petition to name the building after Ginsburg.

Adams started a new petition after Ginsburg’s death that has already been signed more than 103,000 times.

“Two years ago, we launched a campaign to recognize her countless contributions to our country by re-naming the Brooklyn Municipal Building after her,” Adams wrote in an update Tuesday, “Today, I am glad to hear that the Mayor has heeded our call.”

Crucial Quote

“I take heart in knowing that young girls and boys who pass by the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Brooklyn Municipal Building will know her name, learn from her example, and pick up the baton to run their own relay toward a more just, equitable, and fair America. All of us who looked up to her are grateful she is finally getting the recognition she deserves,” Adams wrote.

Key Background

There are multiple tributes in the works to celebrate Ginsburg. The late justicewill lie in repose at the Supreme Court on Wednesday and Thursday and the U.S. Capitol Friday, the high court and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Monday. Ginsburg will make history Friday as the first woman to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol, an honor granted since 1852 to America’s “most distinguished citizens.”

What To Watch For

There may be other renamings in the works for Ginsburg. The state is considering Brooklyn Bridge Park as a location to erect a statue depicting Ginsburg, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday. It would overlook the Statue of Liberty.
