Half of Canadians ‘confused’ about the idea of consent: Women’s Foundation

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A survey from the Canadian Women’s Foundation, as part of its End Violence campaign, finds Canadians are confused about the idea of consent.

Anuradha Dugal, Director of Community Initiatives and Policy, reveals a surprising statistic.

“Fifty per cent of women in Canada have felt pressured to consent to an unwanted sexual activity,” she says. “That’s a very significant number–half of Canadian women have felt pressured.”

Dugal says there needs to be more of a conversation.

“We know that adults’ understanding still isn’t clear,” she explains. “We can talk about it in the workplace, we can talk about it in our leisure activities. I shouldn’t go away.”

She adds the way to combat this issue is educating people about what consent means.
