Police departments—and how they operate—revolve around systems built by men. Systems that killed George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and so many others. Systems that are broken. As the country grapples with how to move forward, it’s time to listen to new voices: women.
The online jobs board analysed almost 77,000 jobs posted to British recruitment websites over six weeks and found that 87% of the jobs advertised actually contained ‘gender-coded’ language. These are words that linguistic analysis from The University of Waterloo and Duke University deemed as either 'masculine' or 'feminine', and would therefore likely skew the gender-weighting of applicants for the role. Jobs which state they require candidates to 'analyse', 'lead' and 'compete' tend to appeal more to men, whereas those which require candidates to 'support', 'respond' and 'understand' are typically more attractive to women.
She and her U.S. teammates threatened to boycott the 2017 World Championship because of pay inequities between male and female hockey teams. They started #BeBoldForChange to document their efforts and raise awareness. According to WBUR, USA Hockey attempted to recruit junior players, pro league players, college players and recreation league players to be replacements for the team, but they declined. Eventually, USA Hockey gave in and offered the team a four-year contract that guarantees a raise, insurance, and travel accommodations equal to what the men receive.
Axl specifically is so proud of [to have a woman in the band]. There was one conversation I remember — this was such a surreal moment in my life.
