Experts chalk up the growing number of women veterans running for Congress to changes in military policy that allowed more women to serve in higher-profile roles. For example, prior to 1993, women were excluded from aircraft that “engaged in combat missions” or from being “assigned to duty on vessels of the Navy except hospital ships and naval transports.” It was not until 2015 that the Department of Defense announced that, for the first time in history, “all military occupations and positions will be open to women, without exception.”
