The Hong Kong Women Workers’ Association was originally granted permission by Hong Kong police to hold a rare public protest on Sunday ahead of International Women's Day, calling for labour rights, women’s rights and gender equality. This would have been the first major civil rights protest to be approved by police in the city for several years.

In a report covering July to December 2022, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, found that the Taliban's treatment of women and girls "may amount to gender persecution, a crime against humanity".
International Women's Day is an annual event to celebrate the achievements of women and push for rights progress. It has roots in the U.S. socialist and labour movements of the early 20th century, particularly as women were fighting for better working conditions and the right to vote.
The Equal Representation Law will apply gender parity measures to electoral lists, the boards of directors of big companies and governing boards of professional associations.
Tunisia has been seen as a leader on women's rights in the Arab world, but campaigners say electoral reforms introduced ahead of the country's controversial recent election made it harder for female candidates to run for office. Preliminary results show only 25 women candidates won seats in the newly configured 161-seat parliament.

Iran ousted from U.N. women’s group after U.S. campaign

The 54-member U.N. Economic and Social Council adopted a U.S.-drafted resolution to "remove with immediate effect the Islamic Republic of Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women for the remainder of its 2022-2026 term." There were 29 votes in favor, eight against - including Russia and China - and there were 16 abstentions.
Norway was the first in the world to introduce a 40% gender quota on the boards of listed companies, in 2005, kickstarting an international push to force companies to have more women on boards. Now, a new proposed law would require that large private firms must have boards that comprise at least 40% of women or they will be shut down.
