The idea for the name of the campaign came from the notion that throughout history, women typically served as the subject (a.k.a. the “muse”) of artworks as opposed to having their own works celebrated in museums and galleries

The female crews comprise a diverse range of nationalities and skill sets, from scientists and journalists, to filmmakers, packaging designers, policy makers, and teachers. “We take people who can both communicate what we’re seeing, but who are also working on solutions,” says Penn. “It’s about building an army.”

The Volvo Ocean Race has finally addressed the issue of gender disparity head-on, mandating new standards that fall just short of forcing participating teams to include female sailors. The new rules dictated that teams that choose to sail all-male would be restricted to just seven team members; teams with at least two women on board could sail with a team of nine; and skippers could employ 10 sailors if their team consisted of an even male-to-female ratio.
