Despite having a female prime minister, the new Danish government continues to be dominated by men: currently, only 7 of the 20 ministerial posts, or 35 percent, are held by women. This represents a drop from the prior government that was comprised of 40 percent women in November 2016.

Speaking to Migros Magazine, Sommaruga said it was important that the Federal Council reflect the structure of the Swiss population, not only its regions and languages, but gender too. “It is important that the population can identify with the Federal Council in their diversity, so there needs to be more than one woman in the Federal Council,” she said.
