At a time when pop culture is grappling with sexism behind the scenes and how women are represented on screen, depictions of masculinity are slowly being rewritten, too. As a woman, it’s been surprisingly refreshing to see men cry and be vulnerable in these ways. But for men watching, these scenes give them permission to do the same - without explaining it away as just something in their eye.
Ultimately, a more diverse broadcast booth can mean that baseball finds new audiences, especially as the sport aims to up its declining viewership. According to the Nielsen Ratings, the average age of MLB viewers is 55 or older. Having a wider set of voices opens up the game to a larger audience, Mendoza said. “Women that don’t watch sports, I think, would want to watch sports if they felt like they were being spoken to more,” she said.
To its credit, the CIA from its earliest days has acknowledged the gender inequities and has attempted to remedy them. In the early 1950s, then-Director Allen Dulles ordered an internal review — led by a group of CIA women famously called The Petticoat Panel — to examine the pay and rank disparities between male and female employees. According to the CIA’s website, the report found that the median grade for women was GS-5 and, for men, GS-9. Not a single woman worked in the senior executive service.
For the most part, she said, she hasn’t had to face any incidents of outright sexism in the job. She isn’t looking to be treated any better than anyone else — just to be treated the same. “People mostly see me the same as anyone else in my job,” she said. “Of course, there’s people out there wondering why a woman would want to be in a man’s sphere, but I’ve never been directly confronted with it. Knowing that’s out there and hearing it makes me want to work harder, and kind of lights a fire in me to prove to people that I can do it.”
North Korea’s human rights abuses, from everyday repression and denial of food to egregious cases of torture and lifelong internment in concentration camps, have been extensively documented. But little attention has been paid specifically to sexual violence against women. “The world doesn’t know what’s happening to North Korean women and girls,” said Jihyun Park, who was trafficked from North Korea and is now an advocate for North Korean women’s rights. “North Korea says women enjoy equality, but it’s not true.”
Gendered vulnerability is the idea that women, due simply to their gender, believe that they are vulnerable to attack by voters, party elites, other political actors and even their colleagues. This stems from two factors. First, some research suggests that women confront a more difficult electoral environment — they must deal with gender stereotypes held by voters and political elites, biased media coverage (which in turn exacerbates voter-held gender stereotypes) and more competition when they run for reelection. Second, those concerns can be magnified by socialization processes that lead some women to doubt their qualifications and to feel like they have to work harder to prove themselves.
