But by bringing up his allegation in his set, alongside discussion of the allegations against Kelly and Jackson, Ansari was implicitly rejecting the argument that someone’s behavior on a date doesn’t belong in discussions of #MeToo.

Despite all the advances women have made in 2018, in some ways it’s just been another Year of the Man. A year of men getting caught, apologizing, and returning to power. A year of men’s stories getting more attention than the stories of the women they’re accused of harming. A year of men remaining at the center of the national conversation.

Thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia allow some form of early voting. So far this year, women have been more likely than men to cast early ballots: they make up 56 percent of early voters so far in Georgia; 54 percent in Texas, Florida, and Tennessee; and 53 percent in Nevada. But since women are more likely to vote in general, what does this trend mean this year?

Men aren’t just the subject of misconduct allegations — they also experience sexual assault and harassment at significant rates. One in six men has experienced sexual violence involving physical contact in his lifetime, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control. As has been pointed out, men are probably more likely to be assaulted than falsely accused.

In 2014, a group of gamers, angry about the state of gaming journalism, began harassing female developers and critics; both the group and their campaign of threats and abuse were known as Gamergate. When Wu made fun of the harassers on Twitter, she had her personal information published and was forced to flee her home. But now she’s returned to public life as one of the many women running for office for the first time in 2018.

“For too long, it has been seen as okay to control women by dictating what is acceptable for us to wear, say, and do,” she said. “I am here today to tell my faceless bullies that I cannot be shamed into quitting, because I am not ashamed.”
