For the first time in history, girl choristers sang alongside the boy choristers of Westminster Abbey for the coronation of a British Monarch.

Because of views about what was appropriate for a woman in the 19th century, Amy wasn’t sent to Europe to study – which is what would have almost certainly happened for a male pianist and composer at the time. Instead, she took lessons with local tutors and read all the books she could find about composition techniques and music history.

Some of today’s greatest orchestral leaders are dynamic, inspiring and innovative... and they also just happen to be women. In 2018, it’s time to celebrate these incredible female conductors.

The Vienna Philharmonic didn’t accept women until 1997. It was founded in 1842, but the notoriously traditional Vienna Philharmonic didn’t allow women to be ‘full’ members until 1997, after years of male members of the orchestra insisting that accepting women would lower their musical standards.

A press release from the opera company stated: "After a thorough examination, it is not possible to change the staging so that there is no danger for the expectant mother and at the same time the core of the production of Jette Steckel remains. There are a variety of physically demanding scenes in this production, including several flight scenes, which are prohibited in principle for pregnant women."
