“Everywhere we go, there are little girls on the beach who really want to do this. They look up to these women as their heroes. So this is a real game-changer.”

Startup boards are dominated by founders and investors, with few outsiders. And the ranks of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists are still far too male. But that feels like something between an excuse and a self-fulfilling prophecy: Nothing says that you can’t tap an outside adviser to serve on your board.

Black Democratic female candidates who recently prevailed in primaries over established incumbents argue that if Democrats flip the House in November, it would be the result of organization and turnout amount black voters, particularly women. If that happens, the candidates said, gratitude won't be enough. They want a seat at the leadership table and a role in re-examining how the party works.

So she co-founded Emerge America, a training ground for women in politics. It now has programs in 25 states.

Nina Wright (alter ego Girl Mobb) realized that out of 100 murals she counted in Oakland, CA only a dozen or so were made by women. She decided it was time to change that. "I wanted to eliminate the intimidation and give females the tools and confidence so if they want to make a piece of public art, they know how to do it,” she says.

“I talk to a lot of young girls about how they want to become coaches,” said Sowers, who dreamed of playing and coaching football as a girl growing up in Kansas. “To see girls who are at an age where I was and to see them actually know that it’s possible — I see that change everywhere I go.”

With women’s status in the film industry very much a topic of discussion in 2018 with movements like #MeToo and Time’s Up in the news, how does the film team feel working on a project that puts powerful women front and center? “It’s an exciting time,” says Marsigliese. “A lot of talented women are coming out of the woodwork, and we’re pulling each other up.”

There are national and international airports in the United States named for presidents, generals, members of Congress, aviators, civil rights activists, mayors, governors, hotel magnates, a city manager, actors, war heroes, a jazz musician, a secretary of state, a comedian and a guy who owned a fur company. But no women.
