Path Forward announced on Tuesday that 10 new companies will be joining its ‘returnship’ program next year, including Apple, Oracle, Intuit, and Udemy. Path Forward works with companies to create ‘returnship’ positions for mid-career professionals—mainly women—who want to get back into the workplace after taking time off to care for a child, parent, or other loved one. The New York-based organization launched in March 2016 after being spun out from data provider Return Path, where it had started as an in-house initiative.

Winter explained that Amazon wanted to reshape the employee experience, including for those who are not parents. “We want to attract great talent and we want to be relevant to the market so we don’t lose talent. This was something we wanted to do for employees, but [improved family leave] pays off in many ways, retention being a key one.”

In societies that empower only women to take a larger share of parental leave, gender equality is worse, fewer moms stay in the workforce, fewer women end up on boards, the wage gap is larger, fewer women end up as managers and fewer women stay employed full time.
