"Of course, I know plenty of cis women who have little or no interest in cooking, and a smaller number of cis men who happily take on food prep duties for their entire households. But when I hear a woman admit that she doesn't cook, it's usually with embarrassment or shame in her voice; when I hear a man say that he cooks for his family, it's a point of pride, a marker of going above and beyond."
After decades of repression under the Soviet Union, feminist activism is reemerging in today's Russia. "Officially, after the [1917 Russian] Revolution, all women's rights were achieved, so therefore according to the Soviet system, feminism as a movement had no need to exist," explains Leda Garina, director of the Eve's Ribs, a social, artistic documentary and communication project devoted to the subject of gender discrimination.
"The lower the rung of power you get, the more comfortable voters are with women in positions of power. I don't think people view their Congress person as the most important person in the world; it's not an executive position. But then you start getting into really high-level offices, and I think you see this in governor races as well, where folks are just a little bit more hesitant."
British firms that have fewer than two women on their board are to be branded with a ‘red top’ warning by investors, in a bid to encourage more diversity at the top of the country’s biggest companies. The move from the Investment Association, an organisation which represents the owners of £7.7 trillion of assets, will apply to all FTSE 350 non-executives. Furthermore, companies with a less than 25% female board will receive an amber warning.
Girls learn to defer to boys, let boys behave as they will, cushion boys' feelings, and soften boys' falls. We learn to be calm, likable, pliable; we learn to doubt our own instincts and neglect our own needs in order to smooth the way for others. When we experience mistreatment and violence, we learn to blame ourselves. Women-only spaces offer a respite from the pressure — and, often, trauma — wrought by that social conditioning.
Resting bitch face — also known as RBF or "bitchy resting face" — is a relatively new term in our lexicon. It's used to describe a supposed condition that causes a person to appear angry or annoyed when they're actually at ease or feeling neutral. Resting bitch face is a completely made-up affliction, and it is slung primarily at women for doing little more than having a face and not always having it arranged in a smile. The audacity.
Baseball still faces deep, institutional segregation: women are supposed to play softball while men play baseball. For example, although the Women's Baseball World Cup has been held every two years since the inaugural tournament in Edmonton, Canada, in 2004, it took until the eighth tournament for the U.S. to host the sport it claims as its national pastime. In contrast, the World Baseball Classic, has been hosted in the United States since its inception.
