The Recording Academy announced Wednesday that next year’s 64th annual awards will be produced with a contractual requirement designed to ensure equity and inclusion at all levels of production. The rider requires the production company staging the Grammys to recruit, audition, interview, and hire onstage and offstage people who have been historically and systematically excluded from the industry.
A report released Tuesday by a law firm hired by the NCAA to investigate gender disparities among the governing body's championship events found that the NCAA "prioritizes men’s basketball, contributing to gender inequity," and that internal support systems and television contracts contribute to the NCAA "significantly undervaluing women’s basketball as an asset."
"I think they are clear examples of female athletes taking agency and telling the sport, telling the public, telling business interests that their well-being is the most important thing, and that is really transformative," says Elizabeth Daniels, a psychology professor at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs who studies women's sexualization in sports.
The case illustrates how universities continue to struggle with the most basic response to sexual assault allegations. Over and over when female students at Louisiana Tech University came forward about Victor Daniel Silva, college officials and police didn’t communicate, didn’t convey critical information, and didn’t connect the dots on a pattern that might have shaped how they pursued the allegations.
"I am extremely excited that all of America’s daughters – and our sons – will be able to see two strong, powerful women, including a Black woman, occupying the dais with the President of the United States. When a child sees something for the first time, it becomes achievable in their mind. We should not discount how powerful this moment will be."
